Frequently Asked Questions

What is Medical Massage?

Medical massage is focused, outcome-based bodywork that addresses specific pain, injuries, or physical dysfunctions. It's often prescribed by a healthcare provider (only needs to be prescribed if you are wanting to bill through insurance) or done in coordination with physical therapy, chiropractic, or post-surgical care. Techniques may include orthopedic massage, trigger point therapy, or myofascial work.

How is therapeutic massage different?

Therapeutic massage focuses on general wellness, stress reduction, and nervous system support. It's ideal if you're feeling tense, anxious, fatigued, or just need time to rest and recharge. These sessions are slower, gentler, and geared toward holistic balance — not necessarily targeting a specific injury.

Can therapeutic massage still help with pain?

Yes — many clients feel relief from chronic tension or posture-related discomfort through therapeutic massage. The approach is less clinical but still highly effective for bodily system regulation and physical relaxation, which often improves pain.

Which service is right for me?

-Choose medical massage if you’re recovering from an injury, dealing with specific pain, or have a provider referral.

-Choose therapeutic massage if you're looking to reduce stress, improve sleep, or support emotional wellness.

-If you're unsure, you’re welcome to text or email to discuss the best option for your needs.

-Regardless of massage type, we always do a thorough intake evaluation and this can also help to determine what might be right for you.

Do you accept insurance?

We are currently working on becoming credentialed with American Society of Health and Kaiser health plans that offer massage as a covered service. We keep our prices very competitive because we are aware that many clients who need clinical work may not be able to afford it out of pocket. Please reach out for other questions related to insurance.

Do I need a referral or diagnosis to book medical massage?

Not always. While some clients come with referrals from doctors or physical therapists, you can book a medical massage without one. We’ll talk through your concerns in a short intake and determine what care fits best.

Are all types of massage available at the same locations?

Yes. Sessions for both Bodywise Medical Massage and Bodywise Therapeutics are available in Kailua, Kakaʻako, and Downtown Honolulu. Just choose the service that feels right for you.
